By Akram Medhat

The Safir Cairo hotel has obtained the Green Star certificate, a benchmark of excellence in environmental responsibility and an indication of the hotel's commitment to applying a set of standards stipulated in the Green Star certification program, which is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The program is run by the Green Tourism Unit of the Chamber of Hotel Establishments under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism, and the number of hotels holding the certificate has exceeded 80 across Egypt's tourist cities.

In this context, Hussein Shoukry, Regional Director of Safir Hotels Egypt, said the certificate works to raise public awareness and encourage positive environmental behavioral changes among guests, hotel staff and suppliers, and to increase the use of eco-friendly and sustainable concepts and practices within the hotel's operations, through the use of new and renewable energy sources, rationalizing water and energy consumption, and applying systems for waste management, the indoor environment and eco-friendly activities.

He explained that the Safir hotel is one of the first hotels in Cairo to obtain the certificate for following environmental standards, stressing the hotel management's keenness to provide distinguished service to guests, and pointing to the global trend among tourists and foreign tour operators to look for hotels holding the Green Star.
